Session #5 – Tresendar Manor (Part 2) – SPOILERS

So we picked up right where we left off, the party clustered about each other next to the cistern (with most of them having just leveled up). Suddenly, though without surprise in either direction, the dreaded “Eye Monster” sprang forth from a secret door on the other side of the cistern. The party unleashed much of their newfound strength upon it (Gwyneth using a Scorching Rays to great effect), the Nothic (as she later disclosed it to be) was felled rather quickly by a combination of both magic and melee – it was the mage Glasstaff who proved more of a threat, his Magic Missile almost felling both Devin and Gwyneth. Before he was felled (a 1 on the Saving Throw) with a well-timed arrow by “Clint of the East Wood” – a Sprite “partner” (Familiar) sent by Fonkin’s Warlock Patron.

At this point the party split for a short bit, the wounded characters staying with the prisoners (2 Redbrands, plus Glasstaff – who they had all recognized from previous descriptions) and getting help from Sildar and the others “up top” while Fonkin, Ilda, and Rhys went to rescue the captives that they had been told were present. While Rhys fell for a trap (to little effect), the party disposed of the skeletal guards with little drama (Fonkin blasted them repeatedly from afar with his Eldritch Blast). They recovered mother and daughter but were saddened to discover that Glassstaff had evidently used the young son’s life to bargain with the Nothic for help. Taking the night to recover, with help from the townspeople for healing again, the party then returned the next morning to finish clearing the cellars of the manor (with Ilda leveling up to 3rd level in the process and choosing College of Valor).

It was a somewhat anticlimactic process – they had slain or captured all of the bandits and other creatures within – so they spent their time searching rooms for treasure and evidence to be used in the coming trial. The most exciting part was Rhys falling into a crevasse when a bridge collapsed beneath him… Gathering treasures and an assortment of papers, the party returned to the inn to meet with Sildar and the rest of the town council, rest for a day or two, divvy up treasure, and discuss plans for actions!

Some Thoughts:

  • Who in the heck designs a set of cellars, especially that cistern room like that? I’m having a similar set of questions regarding Cragmaw Castle…
  • I was really expecting the Nothic to be a tougher fight, especially the Nothic + Glasstaff. I was wrong.
  • I know that 5E is basically a very low-magic setting (which makes no sense whatsoever given that it is set in the Forgotten Realms), but what amazingly stingy rewards to anyone used to older editions of the game…
  • Everyone continues to say how much they really like this edition of the games. KT is loving her Bard far more than she ever thought she would, and KR says the same of her Sorcerer. MR is rocking his Warlock, doing some the best playing I’ve seen from him, while I think everyone is getting a kick out of watching MS play his Noble Fighter. Everyone (including me) is having fun!
  • Anyone else notice that evidently Glasstaff doesn’t have a spellbook? The players did – they also remember that these are worth a fair amount of money (even minor ones filled with common spells). I like this adventure but it is filled with odd little holes like this.

  1. I’ve spent many an hour wondering why something was designed a certain way or if the writer of the module had an editor or even a first reader before the adventure went to print. I feel your pain. Those are places where the GM has to enter into the adventure and fix it to fit their players and the game. I, too, am loving 5E. It is lots of fun.

    • The group have started imitating CinemaSins and making “bing” noises when I stumble across or mutter about inconsistencies or illogicalities in the module…
