More thinking about Humanoids…

Ok, so I have pondered this a bit the past, a couple of times actually. The crap-tastic last gaming session has had me just trying to figure out what the hell to do, and just generally kind of mentally poking at my AD&D campaign setting.

Partially, what I am trying to figure out is how to challenge the player group. The group is right around the 4th-to-5th level range (there is a page here with a short bit of descriptions of the groups), and while Goblins can certainly still be a challenge (and likely will be at some point again) we’re about at the point where I need to step the group up to the next category of humanoids…

Trolls.

Now my trolls are the replacement in my game for most of the giants and as result are a bit more like Tolkien’s trolls that the standard AD&D trolls. Hit Dice range from 6+1-2 for Forest Trolls to all the way up to 12+2-7 HD for the monsterously hideous amphibious Sea Trolls. The other big benefit is that that take 1/2 damage from elemental damage like fire, cold, lightning and they regenerate 3HP per round until death. They also have the chance to ignore missile weapons like arrows, bolts, sling-stones, etc, basically in line with the giants ability to catch or deflect missiles.

Forest Trolls: 9½’ Tall – 25% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 6+1-2HD (29HP) – AC4 – 1d10 Appearing – Alignment: TN

Can Throw Boulders up to 20” for 2-12 Damage

INT: Low – STR: 18/00 +3/+6

Fighting Knife (1d10) Club (1d10), Spear (1d10 : 4”/5”/6” : ROF1), Sling (1d4+2 : 7”/11”/19” : ROF1)

Treasure: 500-2000 coins (50/50 Copper/Silver), 5-20 Gems, 1-6 Jewelry

Hill Trolls: 10½’ Tall – 30% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 8+1-2HD (29HP) – AC4 – 1d8 Appearing – Alignment: CE

Can Throw Boulders up to 20” for 2-16 Damage

INT: Low – STR19: +3/+7

Fighting Knife (1d10), Spiked Club (3d4), Spiked Warclub (3d8), Spear (1d10, 4″/5″/6” : ROF1)

Treasure: 1000-4000 Coins (50/50 Copper/Silver), 5-30 Gems, 1-12 Jewelry

Cave Trolls: 12’ Tall – 90% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 9+1-3HD (34HP) – AC0 – 1d6 Appearing – Alignment: CE

Can Throw Boulders up to 20” for 2-20 Damage

INT: Low – STR20: +3/+8

Spiked Warclub (4d8), Club (2d8)

Treasure: 1000-6000 Coins (30/30/30/10 – Bronze/Copper/Silver/Gold), 10-40 Gems, 4-16 Jewelry

Rock Trolls: 15’ Tall – 90% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 9+1-3HD (34HP) – AC -4 – 1d6 Appearing – Alignment: TN

Can Throw Boulders up to 30” for 2-24 Damage

INT: Average – STR21: +4/+9

Broadsword (2d10+1), Battle Axe (2-20), Fighting Knife (2d6+1), Waraxe (6d6), Throwing Axe (2d6+1 : 6″/7”/8″ : ROF1)

Treasure: 1000-6000 Coins (20/60/20 – Copper/Silver/Gold), 5-20 Gems, 3-6 Jewelry (Troll-sized – x13 in size)

Mountain Trolls: 15’ Tall – 30% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 12HD (45HP) – AC4 – 1d4 Appearing – Alignment: CE

Can Throw Boulders up to 30” for 3-30 Damage

INT: Low – STR22: +4/+10

Spiked Warclub (6d6), Club (2d10)

Treasure: 1000-6000 Coins (25/25/25/25 – Bronze/Copper/Silver/Gold), 10-40 Gems, 5-20 Jewelry

Sea Troll: 16½’ Tall – 60% Immune to Arrows, Bolts, etc – 12+2-7HD (51HP) – AC2 – 1d4 Appearing – Alignment: NE

+1 to Surprise, Claw/Claw/Bite: 2-24/2-24/6-36 (Rend for 4-40 if hit with both claws)

INT: Average – STR23: +5/+11 (If uses a weapon)

Treasure: 30-60 Gems, 1-4 Jewelry (Troll-sized – x27 in size)
